Position: .5 Literacy Specialist Department/Location: The Center SchoolPay: In accordance with bargained scale for 185 daysOrganizational Scope: Reporting directly to the Building Principal and Department Head where applicable with indirect report to the Superintendent as the appointing authority.Position Responsibilities: Teaches literacy to pupils in a classroom, using the course of study adopted by the MA DESE and other appropriate learning activities.Demonstrates an understanding of best practices in the area of reading and encourages teachers to apply these before, during, and after reading. Administers reading assessments and interprets diagnostic results and future instruction based on those results.Demonstrates the ability to present reading as a process rather that a series of skills and encourages lifelong learning.Collaborates with teachers and models the integration of literacy skills, strategies, and technology that promote comprehension in all subject areas.Assists with the development and selection of resources to enhance literacy awareness/focus in all classrooms.Develops, participates in, and delivers professional growth opportunities in the area of literacy.Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a supportive learning environment in the classroom.Evaluates pupils academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupils progress and interpret the school program.Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and engaging displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory recordsSupervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities as assigned during the working day.Administers group standardized tests in accordance with district testing program.Participates in curriculum development programs as required.Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of pupil activities.Other duties as assigned.Job Qualifications & Physical Demands: Must be highly qualified by DESE licensure standards. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and possess a high level of capability with technology. Must be able to assist in the protection of students and school property, assist the principal in fire and other emergency drills as required by law and School Committee policy.
