Associate Computational Biologist - Genetics

Broad Institute – Cambridge, MA

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join Dr. Karestan Koenens lab at the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research at the Broad Institute, reporting to Drs. Alicia Martin and Elizabeth Atkinson. The individual will work closely with the Neuropsychiatric Genetics of African Populations (NeuroGAP) and Neuropsychiatric Genetics in Mexican Populations (NeuroMex) programs, which aim to conduct collaborative neuropsychiatric genetics research and capacity building in historically underrepresented populations in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, and Mexico. Once complete, these studies will be the largest psychiatric genetics collections in Africa and Mexico. The 40,000+ samples collected through these initiatives will be genotyped for GWAS analysis and integrated along with phenotypic data for analysis and dissemination. To learn more about these initiatives, read here: and .

This person will be responsible for integrating and analyzing GWAS and sequencing data, for interpreting genetic association results in the context of deeply phenotyped data sets, and for building a scalable processing pipeline on FireCloud/Terra/Google Cloud. The candidate should have a strong computational background and demonstrated knowledge of research methods, be able to adapt quickly, and be part of a cross-functional team in a rapidly changing environment. Previous experience working with data from diverse populations is a plus.

The Stanley Center and the Broad Institute provide a vibrant multidisciplinary research environment with close links to MIT, Harvard and the Harvard-affiliated hospitals across Boston. As a member of our team, you will be provided the opportunity for your contributions to be utilized and recognized across the vast global network of researchers in the fields of genomics and psychiatric disease research.

  • Working closely with analyst colleagues to understand various methods for investigating association between genetic and phenotypic variables.
  • Working alongside informatics colleagues to clean and analyze genetic and epidemiologic datasets.
  • Application of these approaches to large-scale psychiatric databases.
  • Create pipelines using existing analysis tools to process data in an automated and efficient fashion.
  • Responsible for documentation and error reporting for existing tools.
  • Ensure data quality control is constantly and consistently applied to incoming data sets.
  • Create reports of data quality and communicate these to computational staff.

  • B.S. required in mathematics, statistics, computer science, bioinformatics or other data sciences. Neuroscience or psychology graduates with considerable computational experience will also be considered.
  • Strong initiative and ability to take ownership of assigned tasks and projects essential.
  • Solid understanding of genetic analysis methodologies and tools.
  • Practical experience with Unix environments and proficient in a least one of the following programming languages: MATLAB, R, and/or Python.
  • Interest in cloud computing is a plus.
  • Familiarity with, or interest in studying, psychiatric phenotypes such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, autism and ADHD.
  • Familiarity with, or interest in, studying diverse and global population cohorts.
  • Spanish-speaking and/or Spanish language capacity is a plus.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills.
  • Must be flexible and able to respond to shifting priorities in a dynamic setting.
