Position Summary:
The position is location in Ashland, Oregon, on the main campus of Southern Oregon University. The Associate Director of Business Services is responsible for Business Office operations including oversight of campus accounting activities including general accounting, construction, fixed assets, administration of grants and cost-reimbursable contracts, and payroll. The office operations are an important component to the overall campus business and accounting activities. Business Services has nineteen employees, excluding student employees.
This position reports to the Director of Business Services/Controller who is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the of the Bursar/Cash Management, campus accounting oversight, production of annual financial statements, debt management, payroll, fixed assets, long-term student loans, and Print & Copy Center operations. The Associate Director:
Assures compliance with Federal and State laws and regulations, as well as establishing and maintaining institutional accounting and business policies and procedures, and insuring adequate internal control procedures across various business activities across the campus.
Works with the Director to maintain oversight all changes to the university s Chart of Accounts for use in preparation and production of the university s financial statements, and other financial reporting activities.
Coordinates activities with the University Shared Service Enterprise ( USSE ) in area where the university has contracted with the USSE to provide various financial services to the campus.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in business, accounting, or related field, and 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in business administration or accounting. Supervisory experience. Strong analytical, communication, and mathematical skills. Familiarity and experience with finance and human resource information systems, as well as extensive knowledge of Microsoft office products including Excel and Word.
Preferred Qualification :
  • CPA and Masters degree in business, accounting, or a related field. Experience and knowledge of the Ellucian Banner software product. Experience and knowledge working with databases, including experience with report building software, such as COGNOS. Experience with federal, state, and university laws, regulations, and policies. Commitment to continuous improvement and learning.

Demonstrated office operations or project management experience.

Ability to work with frequent changes in policies and procedures, under pressure of deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Ability to manage stressful situations with tact and diplomacy and to use sound judgement and discretion, particularly as it relates to handling sensitive and/or confidential information.
o Quality Service. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines. Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism to effectively handle a broad range of sensitive interpersonal situations.

Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a record of success in developing planning documents, proposals, budget request justifications, and other forms of communication with executive leadership and faculty.
  • Ability to explain complex accounting principles in a manner that is understandable to non-technical audiences including faculty, students, and staff.
  • A broad financial management background with experience in both daily operations and forecasting.
  • Proven success in managing a large scale, complex budget service organization
  • Demonstrated ability to manage major initiatives and develop concise, understandable policies.
  • Ability to identify and recommend solutions for complex challenges.
  • Working knowledge or able to quickly learn, university infrastructure, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively perform work of a highly sensitive and confidential nature. Must be able to exercise sound judgment and discretion, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
