Position Summary:

Apellis is seeking a passionate, engaging, and collaborative individual for the role of Associate Director of Patient Advocacy for North America. It is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced professional to make a significant impact for patients and the company. The Associate Director will bring the voice of the community to Apellis and will help Apellis connect to the community in order to achieve our shared goals and build an organization that reflects the needs of the community. The insights, relationships, and programming that the Associate Director leads will help support Apellis through the launch of APL-2, ultimately positioning Apellis as a preferred partner for the community across multiple rare diseases and speciality conditions.


Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Assess the patient advocacy and professional medical association landscape in North America.
  • Build and maintain close working partnerships with key patient advocacy and professional medical associations, collaborating with cross-functional partners to ensure consistent and thoughtful effort across Apellis.
  • Proactively seek to understand the priorities of those organizations, identifying shared priorities with Apellis and opportunities to partner to achieve those priorities.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the patient/caregiver experience. Advise the organization on those insights in order to help Apellis design and build solutions that will best serve the community (e.g., access solutions, patient support programs, disease state education, etc.).
  • Translate global product strategies into objectives, strategies, and programs for the North America patient advocacy function.
  • Conceive and bring forward innovative approaches to partnering with patient advocacy groups and professional medical associations.
  • Education, Registration & Certification:

  • BS/BA degree in life sciences.
  • Experience:

  • 6+ years in the pharmaceutical industry or with a non-profit advocacy organization.
  • Deep experience in patient advocacy.
  • Experience in rare diseases is preferred.
  • Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Passion for understanding and championing the needs of people living with rare diseases, their caregivers, and the associated patient advocacy organizations.
  • History of building strong and trusting relationships with external stakeholders, consistently reflecting a high degree of professionalism, maturity, sensitivity, and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated integrity on the job, including an understanding of relevant rules and regulations.
  • Reputation of being a well-respected, dynamic team player.
  • Ability to navigate and be successful in a fast-paced, results-driven environment, managing through ambiguity and leading projects independently.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit coupled with a drive to embrace innovation and develop creative solutions to challenges.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Willing to travel domestically up to 30% of the time and attend events outside of business hours (e.g., occasional weekends and evenings).
  • Physical Demands and Work Environment:

    This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

    This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
