Automotive Mechanic - Opt 2

Under direct supervision of the Elgin Garage Automotive Shop Supervisor, performs skilled mechanical repairs of medium and heavy duty trucks and off-road equipment (tractors, mowers, enloaders, trachoes, backhoes, stationary generators, drill rigs, stripers, stationary engines, diesel and gasoline engines, sign boards, sweepers, chain saws, weed eaters, various small engines); employs standard trade practices and procedures established in the automotive industry. Serves as a traveling mechanic; travels to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) work sites in Oakbrook and Naperville (DuPage County) as assigned; travels to the assigned primary work location and arrives within 45 minutes to perform repairs. Inspects and performs major repair and maintenance to various systems and other components requiring service. Performs welding applications to repair minor components. Operates diagnostic electronic testing equipment. Performs road tests of vehicles serviced by operating them on public roadways to assess driveability issues, including all vehicle types; such as, but not limited to dump trucks, tractor trailers, hot shots and construction equipment with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 lbs and larger; operates tow truck on public roadways to retrieve inoperable vehicles. Completes and submits to the supervisor, shop records and reports. Performs basic upkeep maintenance duties for the work area and assigned vehicle. Minimum Requirements: Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of high school or coursework in automotive mechanics or completion of an approved training course. Requires experience necessary to qualify as a skilled mechanic. Requires a valid Commercial Driver's License - Class B. Requires the ability to travel and arrive at the assigned primary work location within 45 minutes. Prefers ability to repair diesel engines as well as gasoline engines. Requires extensive knowledge of all mechanical hand tools and testing equipment. Requires extensive knowledge of materials and parts. Requires working knowledge of standard garage shop practices and techniques, occupational hazards and applicable precautionary measures. Requires ability to locate and adjust mechanical feedbacks in motors and equipment and make necessary repairs. Requires skill in the use of tools and the operation of the machines and equipment employed in motor repair and adjustment. Requires ability to weld. Requires ability to complete work activity reports.
