Bioinformatics Technician I - Corradin Lab

Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research – Cambridge, MA

TITLE: Bioinformatics Technician I Corradin Lab

The Corradin lab is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual who is interested in utilizing their informatics skills to answer fundamental questions about the genetics of human disease. Determining genetic variants that predispose to common disease provides essential insights into the pathogenesis of human disorders. Rather than impact protein-coding genes, the majority of the genetic risk to disease alters the function of regulatory elements. Regulatory elements are noncoding regions of the genome that play a critical role in controlling gene expression programs. Gene regulation is what enables different cell types of the human body to have diverse functions, thus genetic variants that disrupt this process can have dire consequences for human health.

The Corradin lab is focused on evaluating how DNA variants can work in cooperation to impact gene expression and alters ones risk to developing a disease. This requires analysis of diverse datasets including high-throughput sequencing experiments. This position offers a unique and challenging opportunity to utilize computational and coding skills, biological knowledge, to study important aspects of human health and disease. The lab studies a variety of human disorders including multiple sclerosis, cancer and substance abuse disorders.

Collaborate on short and long term independent research projects to support scientific research objectives of the lab. Utilize programming skills to design and implement tools directly related to biological research. The research includes the analysis of high throughput sequencing data, development of code and algorithms to study questions related to human genetics and using statistical tools to evaluate different hypothesis

  • Quantitative thinking about human genetics problems
  • Knowledge in programming
  • Actively contribute to design and development of human genetics algorithms.
  • Develop and implement existing and new computational methods and tools for high-throughput analysis of diverse data.
  • Integrate multiple types of data and analytical methods in creative ways to exploit genomic information

  • BSc or equivalent in bioinformatics / computational biology / computer science disciplines with emphasis on biology.
  • Proven experience in programming (proficiency of at least one programming language (i.e. python, shell, R)
  • Proficiency with UNIX-based operating systems
  • Experience in data analysis.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to work well independently and demonstrate proficient problem solving competency.
