Performs clinical, clerical, and organizational duties to maintain the efficient function of the medical office.


  • Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Covenant Hospital and demonstrates a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the Hospital.
  • Access to Protected Health Information Computer System access is assigned based on managers access level request and on the minimum necessary described in this job description. Approved Level F for level of access is given by the system administrator or the manager of Corporate Health Services department that has ownership of system/module. See computer Access Control Policy.
  • Ensures every patient has exceptional care experience by welcoming, greeting and warmly addressing patient needs.
  • Functions as a clerical assistant: answers phones, routes messages, locates staff as needed, and assists patient and visitors.
  • Maintains patient files, records and other information to ensure efficient utilization of time including complying with policy and procedures on Privacy Practice.
  • Performs clinical functions within the medical assistants sphere of responsibility as directed by the nurse and/or the physician.

Other Functions

  • Participates in maintaining an environment conducive to safety, patient comfort and privacy, as well as employee safety.
  • Observes established hospital/department policies and procedures, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities/projects.
  • Participates in department meetings, appropriate in-services, and educational opportunities.


This position will need to recognize growth and development characteristic, needs and behaviors of early and middle adult patients who have sustained work related injury/illness and to understand the effect of disability and lost time at work on injured workers. The ability to identify a variety of issues which sometimes interfere with the recovery process.


  • Education: High school graduate or equivalent, Medical Assistant Certificate
  • Experience: One year hospital experience and/or experience in ambulatory care facility preferred
  • Clinical Skills: Could include any of the following: Phlebotomy skills, ability to do EKG, wound care/dressings applications/changes, measurement of vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure), height and weight, immunizations, drug testings, visual acuity, spirometry. breathalyzer, audiometry and other clinical functions as assigned.
  • Clerical skills: typing, computer entry, patient registration, charge entry and filing. Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Flexibility: Perform services at outside facility when assigned, flexibility with work schedule, including shift rotations.
  • Bi-Lingual, fluent in both English and Spanish preferred


  • Medical Assistant Education and preferably certified by the American Association of Medical Assistants or another certification body
  • CPR Certified


  • As a Medical Assistant, access to PHI and its use in limited to only performing job duties as described herein. As a Medical Assistant PHI may only be used for the management of patient care or to procure payment for the delivery of patient care services as described herein.


  • Frequent contact with patients, visitors, employers, physicians, nurses and insurance companies.


  • Some travel outside the hospital is involved using own transportation: 5%
  • Sitting: 60%, Standing/Walking: 40%
  • Lifting/carrying/moving objects on a regular basis: 10% of the time
  • Potential exposure to airborne diseases: 100% of the time
  • Potential risk of blood borne exposure: 100% of the time

Family and Internal Medicine Specialty:

  • This position does require travel between two clinic locations.

Experience in point of care testing Experience with adult and child vaccinations and phlebotomy Familiar with adult and pediatric preventive screening requirements


Knowledgeable in prior authorizations for medications and testing
