Client Embedded Controls Engineer

Our Automation and OT team is successful at Greenfield projects, or retrofit, as well as legacy replacement projects. We typically start with a standard methodology and then modify the approach according to the customer/project needs. We are experienced at executing multi-platform, multi-site projects as well as implementing much smaller solutions. The BSI team will work with clients throughout the entire process to make sure the modern technologies and processes are understood to maximize productivity and efficiency. As an Embedded Controls Engineer, you are relied upon to build and maintain the client relationship while acting as the primary client point of contact for controls projects. You are the focal point for the efforts required to execute projects over the project life cycle. Our Embedded Controls Engineer makes it their number one priority to understand and manage the client s expectations by monitoring and tracking project activities, and communicating to the project stakeholders the project status, risks and recommended mitigations.


  • Develops and writes discipline scope, deliverables, assumptions, and estimates budget for proposals
  • Gathers field data and develops and supervises the use of design criteria document(s) to meet the project objectives
  • Ensures quality and technical accuracy of project deliverables
  • Follows the BSI Standard Operating Procedures and Client Standards
  • Perform concept development, design, and analysis for projects including: controls platform selection; controls wiring diagrams, plan drawings, panel elevations, elementary diagrams,
  • Perform startup and commissioning for projects including: I/O checkout; program loading and checkout; perform function checks of program, failure modes, alarming, and safety relaying; troubleshooting; and operator and engineering training.
  • Performs or ensures all the necessary calculations and design effort to prepare deliverables
  • Ensures discipline s design is accurate and coordinated with other departments
  • Coordinates work with Engineers and delegates/coordinates work with Designers on a project
  • Establishes and manages discipline s engineering schedule and budget objectives on assigned projects
  • Estimates, plans and communicates staff requirements for assigned projects
  • Provides clear direction to designers of project scope, schedule, budget and expectations of quality for small or medium sized projects
  • Ability to manage or self-perform capital cost estimating
  • Supervises or writes project-based documents; including but not limited to studies, project notes, scope, close-out reports
  • Develops technical direction for programming standards and approaches
  • Maintains Subject Matter Expertise in 3 to 5 topics
  • Responsible for all QA/QC activities for assigned projects
  • Responsible for Automation Execution Process
  • Participates in construction support, startup and commissioning efforts
  • Identifies individual training needs and goals, receives training from others and may attend outside seminars and mentors others
  • Develops and carries out specific training sessions for others
  • Interfaces with other design discipline counterparts and project management
  • Interfaces with client as primary point of contact for your discipline
  • Considers other disciplines and overall project requirements during the project lifecycle
  • Participates in interactive planning sessions to ensure scope, schedule, costs and quality are aligned to project objectives
  • Participates in multi-discipline squad checks of deliverables before issuance
  • Provides discipline specific technical advice
  • Identifies and communicates scope change for discipline
  • Continually monitors and communicates forecasted staffing requirements for their assigned projects
  • Strives to achieve the targeted billability goals for position
  • Executes assigned tasks to support business development; participates in sales presentations
  • Provides regular updates of individual marketing resume
  • Represents BSI at conferences or other outside functions in a professional manner
  • Provides direct, timely feedback to supervised team members and peers


  • Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree
  • 10 years of industry experience
  • PLC Programming experience- Rockwell ControlLogix, Siemens TIA portal / PCS7
  • HMI Programming experience- Siemens and Rockwell
  • Knowledge of S-88 Batch Implementations, preferred
  • Experience with Aspen Historian, preferred
  • Understanding of reporting solutions
  • Knowledge of software languages and or database experience with SQL or .NET
  • Experience with PLC control plan design
  • Ability to create instrumentation selection and wiring diagram
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills
  • Proficient presentation skills

  • Responsible for project automation plan contract strategy, schedule, implementation and commissioning/validation
