The Dean s Office in the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences is the administrative unit responsible for 11 academic departments, over 130 tenured and tenure track faculty, more than 200 temporary faculty, and over 40 staff members. The college generates the largest amount of FTEs each quarter and has the second largest budget among the eight academic colleges and school.
The Communication Specialist uses independent judgment to create, write, develop edit and review communications to a wide audience; prints communications, such as college facts sheets, posters, invitations and programs, and also electronic communication, such as websites, email newsletters, social media, digital signage and video; ensures that the college s key messages are communicated effectively and that materials meet the college s and university s vision, branding and editorial standards and ensures consistency of messaging and voice across all media channels. The incumbent collaborates with and supports the efforts of college faculty and staff to ensure that the college s communications is consistent with the mission and strategic initiatives of the college and the university; acts as the liaison for the college with the Department of Strategic Communications and works in collaboration with the Dean s Office team members to respond to adhoc communication needs. The incumbent provides consultation to faculty and staff in the college on communication matters and serves on college and university committees as needed; collaborates with others to plan and coordinate events and conferences that showcase activities and accomplishments of the college and its members. Some events are regularly scheduled (e.g. fall conference, commencement) while other events are ad-hoc (e.g. alumni or donor events.) The incumbent coordinates the marketing and distribution of print and digital communications; creates and updates websites in a timely manner; publishes and curates content on social media; monitors and engages in conversations on social media and coordinates tailored messaging to key audiences, such as engaged donors and alumni; and creates a communication and distribution plan for publications. The incumbent develops methods to measure the effectiveness of communication; gathers metrics on a regular basis and also actively solicit feedback; provides reports on a regular basis and shares recommendations for improving communication, marketing, distribution and collaboration and performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelors Degree in public relations, journalism, marketing or a related field with demonstrated experience in storytelling, editing especially on digital platforms AND up to two (2) years or related professional or technical experience. Comprehensive, in-depth knowledge of communications, strategic communications, media, and/or marketing theories and concepts in order to develop and execute communications strategies and plans to promote and position the university. Expert knowledge of university communication objectives and ability to translate them into effective communication and media campaigns. Ability to understand issues from a broad, strategic perspective. Ability to effectively manage media relations and apply effective media strategies and techniques.
Bachelor s degree in communication, writing, or journalism and/or ten years of relevant professional experience is desired. Previous experience in a higher educational environment; previous experience in using Cascade and the ability to initiate projects, and work independently as well as collaboratively is preferred.
