As a member of the Applicant Services team within Admissions Services, this position is responsible for the evaluation of undergraduate International or graduate domestic and International student applicants to Arizona State University. As a Designated School Official (DSO), this position is also responsible for reviewing, processing, and authorizing of immigration benefits for international students in the SEVIS federal database (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System Database).

Essential Duties

  • Maintains compliance with all government organizations in the management of F-1 student enrollments for both new issuance and transfers.
  • Responsible for data entry of student information and production of Form I-20 immigration documents through the federally monitored SEVIS system.
  • Provides training and guidance to other staff members within Admissions Services and cross-departmentally.
  • Utilizes SUNAPSIS in support of data management and processing for I-20 documentation for F1 Visas.
  • Evaluates domestic and foreign academic documentation and ensures applicants meet requirements of established admission policies and guidelines.
  • Authenticates international academic records from all countries and determine institutional recognition, and equivalencies to US educational system; complete grade and credit conversions to US semester system and calculate GPA.
  • Conducts research into international educational systems and standards and documents research findings for consistency in evaluation among evaluation staff.
  • Applies functional knowledge and responds to matters requiring comprehensive knowledge of department policies and procedures; researches and interprets a variety of levels of information.
  • Collaborates and works with admissions counselors, supervisor, and enrollment management leadership to achieve university enrollment objectives for undergraduate international applicants or graduate domestic and international applicants.
  • Maintains student files, databases, and records in accordance with federal guidelines (FERPA).
  • Responds to written inquiries from students and departments related to admissions processing, student visa, and status inquiries.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. Permanent resident (government requirement to be a DSO).
  • Demonstrated experience working with students, scholars, and staff from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Must pass the DSO exam within 30 days of employment.
  • Must pass U.S. Department of Homeland Security background check and submit all supporting documentation necessary to complete DSO submission.
  • Must attend all initial and ongoing required trainings/orientations provide by ASU related to the DSO role.
  • Assists in the preparation or generation of reports.
  • Works/assist with other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three (3) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience as a DSO for external candidates/ASU candidates should possess a solid knowledge of basic immigration regulations. (1 year)
  • Evidence of effective communicating skills bothorally and in writing, with students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience in analyzing and interpreting complex documents.
  • Experience planning, analyzing and coordinating activities and establishing priorities.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and working in a computer database system (e.g. PeopleSoft, Salesforce, SUNAPSIS, SEVIS).
  • Experience with the principles and practices pertaining to Admissions.

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
