The University of Washington Bothell is one of the most dynamic public universities in the state of Washington. UW Bothells current enrollment is approximately 5,500 students. Located along wetlands and a river north of Seattle, UW Bothell builds vibrant regional partnerships, creates and disseminates new knowledge, and prepares students for leadership throughout Washington and beyond.

The Dean of Diversity and Equity & Campus Diversity Officer (DDE&CDO) advises the Chancellor on policies and actions that are consistent with and reflect the core values of the University to enhance diversity. In collaboration with the deans, vice chancellors, and the campus leadership team, the DDE&CDO provides leadership and coordination of diversity planning and identification of new models to ensure success of diversity initiatives. The DDE&CDO also serves on relevant University-wide diversity leadership bodies. This position is vested with the authority to appropriately advocate, maintain focus, generate ideas, assess progress, and maintain accountability necessary to effect substantive, systemic progress.

DDE&CDO directly supervises and oversees:

  • Student Diversity Center (director and related staff)
  • Academic Transition Program (staff)
  • Office of Diversity and Equity (program coordinator and other related staff)
  • Chancellors Diversity Council

Responsibilities include:

  • Positioning UW Bothell as a national leader with the development and establishment of institutional diversity programs in coordination with University-wide diversity efforts (Diversity Blueprint).
  • Overseeing ongoing work on the Campus Diversity Action Plan, including assisting in the establishment and articulation of the institutional goals and objectives and assessing their outcomes; developing and evaluating criteria used in the resource-allocation, budgeting, and planning processes.
  • Providing collaborative leadership, guidance, and coordination in meeting the UW Bothells responsibility to its external and internal audiences on matters related to campus diversity; establishing and maintaining collaborative partnerships with various communities and representing their interests and views within the Campus and the University.
  • Providing information and analyses on the fiscal, programmatic and administrative implications of proposed policies and their relationship to institutional objectives and relevant community interests, thereby ensuring that diversity-related issues are among key considerations in all major budgetary, administrative, and governance decisions.
  • Facilitating the development and implementation of policies leading to an inclusive and supportive community of learning, incorporating multicultural content and diverse perspectives on ethnic and racial groups, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, social class, veteran status, special needs, etc.
  • Providing strategic direction and operational management for a development program that includes grants, fundraising events, and corporate partners.
  • Supporting programs that promote culturally sensitive leadership skills among the Campuss management, supervisory, and administrative teams.
  • Providing leadership and guidance to principal units that provide educational services to students and in undergraduate and graduate student recruitment and retention.
  • Working collaboratively with Human Resources and other campus entities to implement and evaluate effective polices and strategies for recruiting and retaining diverse faculty.
  • Working proactively, strategically, and collaboratively with the other student-focused central administrative units, such as Student Affairs and ASUWB.
  • Serve as a resource for the development of courses and curricula on diversity, identifies curricular needs of students, including underrepresented students and makes recommendations for improving the educational experience of all students.
  • Lead advisory groups, such as the Chancellors Diversity Council.
  • Serve on the Chancellors Executive Team (CET) and other campus leadership and advisory bodies.
  • Other duties as required.

This position requires tenured faculty appointment at University of Washington (preferably full professor).

The successful candidate will be a visionary and highly collaborative leader with an in-depth understanding of local, national, and global issues facing higher education and has at least 7 years of academic and diversity leadership experience. In addition, the candidate will have a proven record of understanding, respect, and appreciation for ethnically and culturally diverse populations.

Strong oral and written communication skills, as well as substantial successful experience in administering academic and student service programs for underrepresented and first generation students, are essential, as is a successful history of collaborative working relationships with faculty and academic leaders.
