Energy and Transportation System Engineer

Job Description:
As a Senior Design Engineer at Caterpillar, you will be part of a team and work with other product teams across the Innovation and Technology Development Division (ITDD), and Global Power Solutions Division (GPSD) to develop energy storage solution (ESS). You will translate functional requirements into technical specifications, solutions and products. You will translate relevant standards and collaborate with product teams to meet regulatory and commercial requirements for ESS and hybrid energy markets globally. You will be responsible for continually learning and staying abreast of latest hybrid systems technologies, regulations and standards. Candidates need to have a proven history of taking product through Caterpillar New Product Introduction (NPI) Process.

  • This position designs and packages mechanical and electrical components into a system to meet technical requirements of Energy Storage Solution (ESS) that includes batteries, power converter, transformer, HVAC, fire suppression, etc.

  • This position designs and packages rotating electrical components, fluid pumps, routing lube and electrical lines, and mounting ancillary equipment (lube pump, blowers, resistor grid, etc.)

  • This position works with other component and system design teams, GPSD Product Groups, and regulatory / standards organizations to drive effective design solutions that address commercial, customer, regulatory and certification requirements.

  • Translate their functional requirements into technical specifications.

  • Incorporate standards and certification requirements in components and system design.

  • Provide technical input to product support teams for technical publications (OMM, A&I Guide, SOTA, etc.) to provide differentiated support for products in the field.

  • Performs trade-off analysis between product cost Vs product differentiation and recommend solution options.

  • Ensure product meets quality, reliability, durability, and performance targets set by NPI team.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Associates degree or higher in an accredited Engineering or technology curriculum

  • 5+ years of progressive experience in an engineering background

  • Designing and packaging of electrical and / or mechanical equipment and hardware into a system

  • Fluent with Creo solid modeling and drawing tools

  • Experience in product / system design and development

  • Understanding of company policies and procedures related to engineering product development, engineering maintenance.

  • Proven history of participating in technical team and taking product through Caterpillar

  • New Product Introduction (NPI) Process.
Top Candidates Will Also Have:

  • Mechanical Engineering discipline is a plus

  • 2-3 years of experience in any Energy and Transportation (E&T) industry.

  • Good understanding of electrical and mechanical systems for Electric Power and/or Oil & Gas industries.

  • Experience in virtual design / analysis such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

  • Experience interpreting standards (Example: IEEE, UL, IEC, CE, etc.) and incorporating such requirements into product design.

  • Understanding of hybrid / microgrid systems including engine-generator-sets, energy storage systems, inverters, ATS, control systems, etc. and how these components and sub-systems work together to provide hybrid energy solutions to customers.

  • Excellent analytical skills

  • Strong communication skills

  • Self-starter with strong technical leadership skills
