VDOT s Central Office Materials Division is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to work in the Soils, Aggregates, and Buried Structures Section. The selected candidate will assist the program manager with the administration of a statewide soils and aggregate testing laboratory and the statewide aggregate program. Duties include but are not limited to: providing technical assistance with soils and aggregate testing and documentation; recommendation of aggregate base and subgrade properties for pavement design; helping the soils lab maintain the AASHTO resource accreditation; plan and specification review and preparation; policy document review, revision, and authoring; data inventory and management; approved lists and new product evaluation; and program QA management assistance. This position is physically located in Sandston, VA. Virginia PE required, or current PE in another state with the ability to obtain a VA PE within 6 months of start date. Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent experience and/or training may substitute for degree. Knowledge of geotechnical and civil engineering principles and practices related to highway design, construction, and maintenance. Considerable knowledge of soils and aggregate test methods. Experience in relevant laboratory work. Ability to oversee and assess the work of consultants. Knowledge of geotechnical aspects of pavements. Ability to write specifications, test procedures, and technical directives. Experience in construction materials to include acceptance, quality assurance and quality control. Ability to provide technical direction, guidance, and training to others. Ability to provide guidance on policy and procedures and procedure interpretation relating to program area. Ability to work independently and with internal and external customers. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Valid driver s license. Skilled in the use of computers and software applications. Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Advanced degree in Civil Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience and/or training may substitute for degree. Experience in database management and executing independent research and/or evaluation studies. Knowledge and experience working with geosynthetics and pipe and culvert design/practice.
