VDOTs Central Office Materials Division is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to work in the Soils, Aggregates, and Buried Structures Section. The selected candidate will assist the program manager with the administration of the statewide aggregate program, a statewide soils and aggregate testing laboratory and related areas including geosynthetics, pipe and culvert practices, and roadway base and subgrade issues. Duties include, but are not limited to providing technical assistance with roadway, pavement aggregate base and subgrade, and culvert design and maintenance; soils and aggregate testing and documentation; plan and specification review and preparation; policy document review, revision, and authoring; data inventory and management; new product evaluation; and program QA management assistance.

Virginia PE required, or current PE in another state with the ability to obtain a VA PE within 6 months of start date. Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent experience and/or training may substitute for degree. Knowledge of geotechnical and civil engineering principles and practices related to highway design, construction and maintenance. Considerable knowledge of soils, aggregate, and geosynthetics as a construction material. Experience in laboratory work. Ability to lead and oversee complex geotechnical projects, and the ability to oversee and assess the work of consultants. Knowledge of geotechnical aspects of pavements. Ability to write specifications, test procedures, and technical directives. Experience in construction materials to include acceptance, quality assurance and quality control. Ability to provide technical direction, guidance, and training to others. Ability to provide guidance on policy and procedures and procedure interpretation relating to program area. Ability to work independently and with internal and external customers. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Valid drivers license. Skilled in the use of computers and software applications. DOT Radiation Training Certificate HPS 900F required within 3 months of starting. Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Advanced degree in Civil Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience and/or training may substitute for degree. Skills in negotiating. Experience in database management, pipe designs based on AASHTO LRFD Specifications, and executing independent research and/or evaluation studies.
Fingerprint-based Criminal History Background Check and DMV Record Check are required.
If your Professional Engineers (PE) License is not in the Commonwealth of Virginia, you must apply for Virginia PE licensure before employment begins.
