First Assist (Seasonal) Surgery- First Assists Full-Time Days St. Mary\'s

POSITION SUMMARY:
This position assists professional staff in providing care for the operative patient before, during and after surgery. The First Assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions that will help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. Assumes, under the direction of the Laboratory, responsibility for patient specimen testing, quality control, quality improvement, and equipment maintenance.
POSITION DUTIES:
Actively participate in direct patient care and ensure a safe and comforting environment before during and after surgery.
Ensure that patient equipment and supplies are available and in operating condition.
Perform clinical quality improvement activities such as patient satisfaction, physician satisfaction and staff satisfaction.
Assist with the positioning, prepping, and draping of the patient.
Provide hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels, and by other means as directed and supervised by the surgeon.
Provide exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques. Handle tissues as directed by the surgeon.
Apply surgical dressings.
Assist with transferring the patient from the operating room.
Open and close incision and vein retrieval. Performs point-of-care procedures in a timely manner according to established policy and procedure.
Document required information and comply with all point-of-care quality control standards.
If there are no cases that require the use of a first assist, then the first assist will perform the duties of their corresponding counterpart; i.e. surgical tech.
Level 2 Proficient (in addition to above duties)
Participate in training new staff.
Assist the department Manager/Director as requested in review and update of department functions and procedures.
Level 3 Subject Matter Expert (in addition to above duties)
Participate in performance improvement teams/activities and quality improvement measures within the department.
Qualifications:
Education
Required: High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (G.E.D.)
Preferred: Associate degree in an allied health field
Certificates
Preferred: Surgical Assistant-Certified (SA-C)
Experience
Required: Three (3) years of current operating room scrub and/or assisting experience within the last 5 years.
Skills
Required: Performs at a proficient level, all tasks within the specialty area. Able to operate all appropriate clinical equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. Able to perform the necessary functions on the facility s computer system. Must be able to interact and communicate in English, both orally and written, with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and families in an effective manner, exhibiting tact, enthusiasm, and patience. Must be sensitive to cultural and bilingual issues.
Knowledge
Required: Requires good communication and organizational skills. Requires reasoning ability and good independent judgment. Requires working with frequent interruptions. Able to comprehend and interpret complex clinical subject matter related to specialty.
Other
Required: Requires corrected hearing and vision within a normal range and ability to distinguish color. Understands the mission and vision of the hospital. Operates within the concept of patient focused care. Evolves into an effective team member. Must adhere to dress code; good grooming and personal hygiene habits; and strict adherence to attendance policies. Maintains knowledge of and conforms to hospital policies and procedures.
