Hourly Academic Advisor (Advising and HS Programs)

As a member of the Student Services Division, and the advising and High School Programs Department, the Academic Advisor reports to the Advising Center Program Manager. The Academic Advisor teaches new and prospective students how to navigate the enrollment process to include selecting a degree/certificate program or academic pathway of interest, identifying options for funding and assessment, and preparing for a successful transition to college. Advising may be conducted in person in a group setting, on an individual basis, via email/phone or video conference/Skype, and through proactive programming/outreach to students. This is an hourly position, averaging 16 hours per week with availability to work Monday and Tuesday evenings until 7:00 PM while classes are in session. Specific schedule will be determined at time of hire.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides academic advising to prospective and new Highline students as a generalist advisor. Demonstrate and teach students to access and use online student services and resources. Communicates and interprets academic policies and procedures to students. Directs students to campus and community resources. Develops and maintains teaching aids, handouts and worksheets as guides for students. Explains college procedures and policies. Educates students about academic degrees, programs and certificates. Assists students in developing an educational plan that supports their personal and career goals. Communicates by phone, email and in person, responding to academic inquiries in a timely manner. Maintains electronic student records, documenting and summarizing advising sessions. Maintains confidentiality and adheres to institutional, state and federal policies.Ability to: Use Microsoft Office Suites proficiently; Communicate clearly (oral and written); Ability to use computerized information/software relevant to the position; Works effectively in a diverse work environmentKnowledge of: Student development theory; Best practices related to advising and student retention.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor s degree in Psychology, Human Services, Education or related field.DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Master s degree in Student Development, Education, Counseling or Higher Education Administration; Prior higher education experience; Experience making presentations and facilitating small group discussions; Experience with an information tracking systems such as the Student Management System (SMS).
