Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking an Immigrant Rights Assistant (Temporary) for the School of Law which will report to the Staff Attorney of the Immigrant Rights Clinic (IRC).

The Immigrant Rights Assistant (Temporary) will work with the IRCs Deportation and Detention Defense Initiative (DDDI), which is part of a groundbreaking New Jersey universal representation pilot program to provide legal representation to detained, low-income immigrants facing possible deportation. The assistant will gain a unique opportunity to be a part of initiatives that show the value of providing legal representation for all, while also practicing a number of valuable skills, including legal research and writing, litigation preparation, and client interaction duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assists in offering pro-bono immigration court representation to men and women detained at the Elizabeth Detention Center (EDC) and Essex County Jail (ECJ). Conducting intakes and meetings with detained individuals at both EDC and ECJ.
  • Prepares legal briefs and other submissions to the immigration courts for clients seeking asylum, bond, cancellation of removal, termination of proceedings, and other forms of immigration relief available to detained individuals.
  • Assists with immigration court hearings.
  • Participates in legislative meetings and collaborating with community stakeholders.

The position will work out of our Newark clinic at Rutgers Law School, located at 123 Washington Street, Newark, NJ.

Minimum Education and Experience

Requires a bachelors degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Also requires a minimum of one to three years of relevant professional experience in an administrative and/or supervisory function, excellent communication skills, and computer literacy.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Applicants should have strong academic credentials, writing skills and attention to detail.
  • Professional fluency in Spanish is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience in immigration law, conducting country conditions research, or working with immigrant populations is a plus.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Applicants must have completed one year of an accredited Juris Doctor or LLM program by the start date.
