Library Technical Assistant, Library

The Macdonald-Kelce Library at The University of Tampa has an opening in the Circulation Department for an Evening Library Technical Assistant to assist in the daily functions of the Library including front desk responsibilities, supervision of student employees and creating the best possible customer experience for patrons. The successful candidate will report to the Circulation Manager and handle the day to day processing of Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests. The technicians duties include requesting materials through the ILL system, processing requests and notifying patrons upon receipt of materials, and filling requests from other libraries.


  • Processes all borrowing and lending Interlibrary Loan requests in a timely manner, and follows national and international ILL standards and practices.
  • Communicates with students, faculty, staff, and other libraries promptly to fill borrowing requests and resolve lending questions.
  • Collects and records ILL statistics in support of annual reporting requirements, and to support data informed changes to services, programs, and the user experience.
  • Work with other institutions to resolve refunds and payments relating to lost and damaged items.
  • Provides excellent customer service that supports the research and teaching needs of UT faculty staff and students.
  • Uses integrated library system to check in and check out library materials, equipment, and study rooms. Registers new users, edit patron records and collects fees and fines.
  • Shares responsibility for training student employees and supervising work assignments.
  • Alternates with other staff members in desk duty during service hours.
  • Assists with inventory projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • High School Diploma or its equivalent is required.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills. Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to interpret, use, teach, and explain the use of library resources.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn quickly The University of Tampa software programs such as Workday.
  • Ability to manage time wisely and prioritize a variety of tasks in a busy environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Significant and relevant experience providing customer service or delivering instruction.
  • Possesses a positive attitude, ability to be future-oriented, and embraces change.
  • Computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must have flexibility to work a varied schedule during exam weeks.
  • Be solution oriented with strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Must be able to interact with a diverse population of students, staff and faculty.
  • Willingness to embrace new technologies and innovative organizational practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one year of experience working in circulation or ILL in an academic library.
  • Knowledge of library practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of library systems and software, including circulation functions.
  • Knowledge of copyright and intellectual property issues.

Pay Rate

$11.25 per hour

Work Schedule
Work hours for this position will vary throughout the year but typically will be 4: 00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. (Sunday through Thursday) during the academic year and 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. when classes are not in session.
Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday, 12:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
