Maintenance Assistant

Maintenance Assistant performs moderately complex (journey-level) grounds , (entry level) building maintenance and construction work. Work involves assisting in maintaining and repairing buildings, utility systems, or stationary and motorized equipment. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Work involves caring for and maintaining the appearance of grounds, gardens, maintaining and repairing grounds keeping tools, supplies, equipment and includes assisting the repairing and maintaining buildings in associated utility systems preventive maintenance. Will assist in the repairs or maintenance of emergency generator, boilers, water mains and lines, irrigation, sanitary drains and sump pump waste systems, air handlers, exhaust fans, smoke dampers, duct installation, electrical lines, motor installation, communications, access panels, lock, security systems, CCTV, fire alarm smoke detectors and network input sources. Work will include itemizing needed materials and supplies for the grounds. Works under general supervision.
Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
1. Performs moderately complex (journey-level) grounds, and entry level building maintenance and construction work.
2. Work includes a basic knowledge of the applicable Life Safety Codes and of the State Fire Marshall s requirements.
3. Most of this work focuses on the repair to lawn mowers and trims grass and trims, fertilizes, waters, removes, and plants trees and shrubs.
4. Operates powered equipment such as mowers, tractors, chain-saws, electric clippers, sod cutters, and pruning shears.
5. Removes dirt, rubbish, and refuse from grounds.
6. Services, repairs, and conducts preventive maintenance on grounds keeping equipment.
7. Repairs, paints, and performs preventive maintenance on parking lots, roads, and sidewalks. Drives trucks and hauls materials, supplies, dirt, and office furniture.
8. Mixes, sprays, or spreads fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, and trees, using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders.
9. Assists in the upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, or other grounds features.
10. Performs landscaping work.
11. Installs, maintains, and performs preventive maintenance on sprinkler systems.
12. Assists with carpentry, plumbing, electrical, construction, and mechanical maintenance staff.
13. Assists in maintaining and repairing facilities, buildings, equipment, machinery, vehicles, and grounds.
Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agencys obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
1. Knowledge of the planting and care of trees, shrubbery, flowers, and grass; of pesticides and fertilizers; and of hand and power tools and equipment.
2. Knowledge of building maintenance and general repair work.
3. Knowledge of building maintenance and general repair work.
4. Skill in the use of tools and equipment.
5. Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
6. Skill in the use of grounds keeping hand tools and equipment, in the operation of motorized and gas-operated equipment, and in the maintenance and repair of sidewalks and parking lots.
7. Ability to maintain and care for hand and power tools.
Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Must possess valid Texas drivers license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state drivers license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy
Initial Selection Criteria:
1. Experienced in grounds keeping work.
2. Experienced in maintenance and construction of building.
Additional Information:
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, and HHS OIG list of Excluded Individuals/Entities. Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

Salary Note: The salary offered will follow HHS starting salary guidelines which are typically made at or near the posted minimum of the salary range.

All of these diseases are vaccine-preventable. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with patients.
