Medical Clinical Assistant

The Clinical Assistant is responsible for assisting the care team across the market with the evaluation and management of all patients in the clinic. Duties include conducting screeners and assessments, entering data into electronic medical records system (EMR), drawing blood, assisting with the clinic flow and administrative duties including registering and scheduling patients, telephonic clinical triage and care coordination. The Clinical Assistant is also responsible for performing laboratory tests,processing/prepping lab samples, EKGs and spirometry;as well as assisting other team members with clinical care functions.

Job Requirements

Essential Duties:

  • Performs all relevant medical tasks including collecting vital signs, phlebotomy, performing EKGs and other minor diagnostics/treatments, administering injections and routine immunizations, assisting Provider with minor procedures, quality control testing, and maintaining CLIA waiver log, etc.
  • Prepares patient charts including DIs, referrals, preventative screeners, labs, and DMEs.
  • Gathers personal and clinical information from patient, readies paperwork and communicates information to care team as appropriate
  • Participates in developing and updating of HPI, Social History, vitals, assessment and plans for patients
  • Communicates with patients and their family to put them at ease.
  • Maintains medical supply inventory for clinic; keeps patient rooms stocked with supplies as appropriate
  • Processes various types of medication refills.
  • Schedules patient appointments, per scheduling guidelines.
  • Processes patient referrals, prior authorizations and DME; schedules and coordinates appointments with specialists and outside organizations as needed
  • Manages incoming and outgoing information/records received from specialists, hospitals, and emergency rooms; appropriately indexes documents
  • Accurately updates patient information in the EMR (i.e. demographics, contact preferences, insurance information etc.).
  • Identifies the health maintenance needs before welcoming the patient to the exam room (i.e. PhilaVax, outstanding preventive screeners needed, etc.)
  • Previews the schedule in advance, re-evaluates it throughout the day; tracks the flow of the clinic schedule to keep team on track and on time.
  • Prepares patient charts including DIs, referrals, preventative screeners, labs, HPI, vitals and DMEs.
  • Communicates with patients and their family to put them at ease.
  • Collaborates with provider to ensure patients receive appropriate counseling and health education at time of visit or via telephonic follow-up (i.e. explanation of lab results, glucometer and inhaler teaching, chronic disease education, etc.)
  • Manages influx of clinical triage calls; conducts appropriate triage over the phone and assesses whether patient can be treated telephonically or needs to be seen by provider
  • Works in partnership with team members; collaborates with care team to ensure patients healthcare needs are being met.
  • Maintains member privacy at all times by following HIPAA guidelines.
  • All other duties as assigned by leader.


  • Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing
  • Valid registration/certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) in the state of New Jersey
  • At least 1-2 years recent experience in primary care
  • Experience in urgent care or emergent care a plus
  • Must have recent experience in phlebotomy/venipuncture
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Providers and others to resolve issues
  • Ability to demonstrate reliability and responsiveness to patients, families and coworkers
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
