Medical Technologist I, ASCP / 40 Hours / Day / Pathology / BWH

Under general supervision, the Medical Technologist I (MT I), in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, carries out all policies and performs all tests in accordance with the departments standard operating procedures. Works independently in an efficient and organized manner to assure accurate results and records. Assists with training of staff. The work requires a professional level of knowledge to read and interpret accurately test results used by providers in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities as outlined by CLIA:Testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting test results.1. Follow the laboratory s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.2. Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens;3. Adhere to the laboratory s quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.4. Follow the laboratory s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory s established acceptable levels of performance.5. Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director.6. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory s established performance specifications.7. If qualified under 493.1489(b)(5), perform moderate and high complexity testing only under the onsite, direct supervision of a general supervisor qualified under 493.1461.Exception: For individuals qualified under 493.1489(b)(5), who were performing moderate and high complexity testing on or before January 19, 1993, the requirements of paragraph (b)(7) of this section are not effective, provided that all moderate and high complexity testing performed by the individual in the absence of a general supervisor is reviewed within 24 hours by a general supervisor qualified under 493.1461. Additional responsibilities under the direction of the Technical Director and Clinical Supervisor may include: 1. Responsible for following Microbiology Laboratory procedures for specimen handling, specimen processing, reagent preparation, test analyses, and reporting results.2. Demonstrates working knowledge of Microbiology and independently performs routine and high complexity microbiology tests and procedures on all patient specimens according to laboratory standard operating procedures utilizing complex instrumentation and established manual methods.3. Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation and reporting of all test results according to laboratory policies.4. Performs routine maintenance on equipment and quality control for all reagents.5. Keeps accurate records of quality control, maintenance and workload data according to laboratory policies.6. Responsible to document all corrective action procedures undertaken in the Microbiology Laboratory.7. Refers problems and/or unusual results to appropriate parties and documents all corrective action procedures undertaken in the Microbiology Laboratory.8. Performs clerical and support services as needed, such as answering the telephone, calling Super Stat, Code sample results, and/or alert values to the appropriate department or Licensed Care Provider, disposing of contaminated specimens, control of inventory, monitoring pending logs, and other assigned duties.9. Participates in Proficiency Testing program including the handling and analysis of Proficiency Testing material.10. Communicates with hospital personnel providing assistance related to laboratory policies and procedures, laboratory utilization, and test result interpretation.11. Additional responsibilities may include ordering and maintaining an appropriate level of inventory and laboratory supplies.12. Keeps current in developments in technical instrumentation and analytical techniques in Clinical Microbiology.Participates in internal and external continuing education.13. Promotes the mission and vision of Brigham and Womens Hospital and laboratories, and a spirit of professionalism and excellence in performance among the Microbiology laboratory staff.14. Adheres to hospital and laboratory policies and procedures and plans including infection control and safety plans.15. Performs any other duties as required, which may include but not limited to general laboratory duties such as processing specimens, logging in specimens, putting supplies away, washing pipettes, discarding laboratory samples, racking samples, etc. QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS:1. Must possess a minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or Chemical, Physical, or biological science from an accredited college or university. OR2. Other qualifications as described in the Federal Register, 42 CFR, Subpart M 493.1351 1495.3. ASCP certification or equivalent preferred.SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: 1. Must have a high level of knowledge, both practical and theoretical, to relate test results to normal and pathological states.2. Must possess visual acuity to distinguish fine gradations of color and/or texture and manual dexterity sufficient to work with laboratory instrumentation.3. Must have a comprehensive understanding of laboratory equipment and its operation, maintenance and repair and analytic techniques.4. Must have understanding of computer technology and its application to chemical analytical procedures and quality control.5. Must have the ability to work independently, evaluate situations and act appropriately. Must be able to remain calm and productive under constant pressure and emergency situations, which produce a high level of stress and mental fatigue.6. Must have neat and orderly work habits.7. Must have the ability to pay careful attention to detail and to adhere to written protocols.8. Must be able to perform as a team member, provide leadership, guidance and direction to staff.9. Must be able to remain calm and efficient in stressful situations.10. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact professionally and effectively with numerous staff members, including physicians, hospital personnel, employees and patients.11. Must possess excellent communication skills.12. Must have knowledge of Federal, State, Joint Commission and other regulatory regulations.WORKING CONDITIONS: .1. Busy, stressful clinical laboratory environment.2. Exposure to infectious blood, urine, and other body fluids.3. Work requires frequent standing, walking and/or occasional lifting or carrying of supplies.4. Noise level is high due to continuous operation of lab equipment.
