Position Description

Pipeline Engineer - Hydraulic/LDS

This position will divide its focus on hydraulic simulation, leak detection system analysis and to a lesser extent, pipeline automation. The successful candidate will be performing hydraulic simulations for surface facilities, crude and natural gas liquids pipelines. Some hydraulic and flow assurance modeling including: single phase steady state and transient hydraulics analysis (using Synergi Pipeline Simulator) and, to a lesser extent, multiphase thermal and hydraulic steady state, surge analysis and transient analysis. The candidate will also develop, update, and provide leadership, oversight, management, and technical support for new and existing implementations of Emerson Energy Solutions International (ESI) pipeline leak detection software Pipeline Manager / Pipeline Studio, LeakWarn and Atmos LDS. The candidate will also have the opportunity of be involved in existing and new automation projects as part of the Engineering team. The Engineer supports new and existing projects in Engineering and Operations through Hydraulic Modeling to address system changes, provide operations with a model of the pipelines, improve operating efficiency, identify opportunities for improvement, mitigate risk, and address business questions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform steady state and transient simulations for single and multiphase flow using industry standard software and prepares technical reports for surface production facilities and pipelines.

  • Developing and tuning static and transient hydraulic models for pipeline systems using standard software packages to evaluate operating parameters, system design, pipeline capacity, and surge analysis.

  • Collaborating with stakeholders to develop model scenarios and simulations to address business questions, support growth initiatives, and provide results useful for economic analysis.

  • Providing guidance to project engineers and 3rd party engineering firms regarding model configuration and operating scenarios, including mentoring and training in hydraulic modeling and simulation.

  • Developing and implementing tools for the Control Center operations using Synergi Pipeline Simulator to minimize keep their trainer/model up to date with the latest pipeline changes.

  • Pipeline simulation, development, testing and support utilizing Emerson PipelineManager or PipelineStudio software, LeakWarn and Atmos LDS.

  • Updating and patching versions, and other support and maintenance activities associated with the LDS in Liquids Pipelines. This will include upgrading the LeakWarn LDS to the newer PipelineStudio

  • Support with specifications and requirements to fully implement leak detection software based on requirements from Pipeline Integrity, Project Manager, Operations, EHS, SCADA, and Pipeline Control

  • Work closely with the Control Center and the SCADA department in maintaining the connectivity between the LDS and SCADA supplied data

  • Assist Pipeline Control and Operations when needed and provide after hours support in order to help verify alarms/alerts within the leak detection model

  • Assist in automation projects where PLC automated systems are used. This may include MOC support, documentation support and Operations support.

    Qualifications

    Basic/Required:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an accredited university. Experience may be considered in place of a degree.

  • Working knowledge of Fluid Mechanics or Hydraulic Modeling

  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Excel

  • Travel will be limited, but must being willing to if necessary

  • Preferred:

  • 5 or more years of experience in the Oil and Gas industry

  • 3 or more years of experience with liquid pipeline hydraulic simulation/optimization

  • 3 or more years of experience with ESI PipelineManager/Studio and Atmos LDS. Proficiency in LeakWarn also preferred.

  • Working knowledge on electrical, control and instrumentation drawings

  • Working knowledge of computer hardware/software, OPC connections, and Process Controls

  • Working knowledge in AB RSLogix 5000 PLC programming (at least an understanding of ladder logic) and/or willingness to learn.

  • Working knowledge of rotating equipment (pumps/motors/engines) and efficiency optimization

  • Working knowledge of pipeline volumetric movements and line displacement

  • Working knowledge of the basics of product and crude characteristics

  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written

  • Self-motivated and requires little supervision
