Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

Background:

The British Consulate General in San Francisco is offering a Fall 2019 internship opportunity in its Politics, Press, & Public Affairs (PPPA) department.

The British Consulate General in San Francisco is the United Kingdoms diplomatic mission responsible for the Pacific Northwest (Northern California, Oregon, Washington State, Alaska, Montana and Idaho). PPPA handles the communications side of a host of public diplomacy issues, including energy and climate change, prosperity, UK-US trade and UK-US scientific collaboration. PPPA handles all media-related issues, arranges visits to the region for VIP UK officials and manages the Marshall Scholarship selection process for the region.


We are seeking a motivated intern to help with work on all of the above topics, notably on research, analysis and documentation related to PPPAs daily work and focussing on British Government foreign policy objectives. Work will be project based and will include some social media work.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Researching local, regional and national print and online media and identifying articles relevant to areas of interest.

  • Learn how to produce content for the Consulates social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram).

  • Undertaking background research in order to compose briefs and bios on organisations and their personnel, topical issues and events.

  • Work alongside the Politics, Press and Public Affairs team organise visit programmes for official UK delegations.

  • Supporting Politics, Press and Public Affairs team in organising Consulate events.


Essential qualifications, skills and experience
  • Must be a junior or a senior in an undergraduate programme, or enrolled in a graduate programme. Students majoring in International Relations, Political Science or Communications are preferred.

  • Strong research, analytical and organisational skills.

  • Knowledge and understanding of social media platforms

  • Ability to work independently.

  • An understanding of international relations (preferably UK-US relations), US politics in San Franciscos consular patch and traditional and social media.

This program offers internships for 15-25 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters, and up to 40 hours pe week during the summer. These are unpaid internships, for college credit only, but the Embassy does provide a stipend of $100 per month for transportation costs.

Under US State Department requirements, the Embassy may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Green Card holders, A or J1 Visa holders with valid Work Authorization Document. If you hold a Visa other than an A or J1 Visa you are not currently eligible to work at the Embassy. All candidates will be subject to background checks and security clearance.
