Product Development Mechanical Engineer

Johnson Controls is searching for an innovative Mechanical Engineer within the Fire Detection Products organization, located at the R&D facility in Westminster, MA. You will develop new fire detection products as well as support existing product lines. In this hands-on position you will work directly with sales, marketing, tooling and prototype suppliers, and manufacturing.


How you will do this

  • Develop next generation notification appliances and fire alarm panel assemblies
  • Design innovative products with a focus on manufacturability and serviceability
  • Prove concepts through peer review, rapid prototyping, soft tooling, validation testing, and production launch readiness
  • Provide creative solutions to challenges that arise during new product development lifecycle
  • Participate in peer design reviews to ensure best design practices are followed
  • Lead improvement efforts on existing products and provide technical support to sales, marketing, and customers
  • Assume mechanical responsibility within cross-functional engineering teams
  • Initiate and execute ECOs following R&D departmental procedures
  • Qualifications

    What we look for

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering (BSME preferred)
  • Minimum 1-3 years related work experience preferred; new graduates with good academic standing will be considered
  • Experience with injection molding, plastic part, and assembly design
  • Experience with sheet metal electronic packaging design
  • Knowledge of engineered resins, metal finishes, and platings
  • Competent with Pro/E Creo, SolidWorks or equivalent (Pro/INTRALINK a plus)
  • Experience with offshore tooling suppliers and production facilities
  • Strong organizational skills with a focus on short and long term deliverables
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be comfortable working in a cross functional team environment
  • Understanding of agency certification requirements (UL, ULC, CE, CSFM, CSA, FCC)
