Public Works Worker I, II or III

JOB DEFINITION:

Under general direction of the Public Works Superintendent or designee, completes skilled tasks in the maintenance, repairs, and construction of water, sewer, storm drainage, streets, facilities maintenance and parks projects.

There is one vacancy. Applicants will be considered based on qualifications and may be hired as a Public Works Worker I, II, or III:

Worker I. Hiring Range $41,883-48,913. Must be 21 years of age, valid CO drivers license, Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within 6 months of appointment.


Worker II. Hiring Range: $45,861-53,751. Worker I qualifications plus Class 1 Water Distribution within 1 year of appointment, Class 1 Wastewater Collections Certification within 1 year of appointment.


Worker III. Hiring Range: $47,581-55,901. Must be 21 years of age and minimum of three years of journey level experience in public works, Worker I and II qualifications plus Class 2 Water Distribution within 1 year of appointment, Class 2 Wastewater Collections Certification within 1 year of appointment. Serves as a lead worker providing guidance and direction to lesser experienced personnel while performing daily tasks. May serve as reserve Operator in Responsible Charge (OCR) for water and sewer operations in absence of supervisor. Assists with annual activities and special events as needed. Provides assistance to City departments as needed.

GENERAL REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:


Water Supply and Distribution:

Operates, repairs and maintains City wells and related equipment. Conducts water quality sampling and testing. Locates underground lines; maintains, repairs and replaces water mains, valves and service lines. Maintains, repairs, installs fire hydrants and reads residential and commercial meters.


Wastewater Collection:

Operates and maintains lift stations and repairs equipment. Conducts line locations; maintains, repairs and replaces sewer mains and service lines. Conducts inspections of wastewater utility installations as needed. Conducts video inspections and cleaning of sewer mains.


Storm Drainage System:

Conducts physical and video inspections, repairs, cleans and maintains storm drainage system including manholes, grates, inlets, outlets and connecting pipelines.


Streets:

Performs equipment operation for snow plowing, street sanding, cleaning and asphalt repairs. Mows easements and rights of way; repairs and maintains streets, crosswalks and street signs.


Building Maintenance:

Maintains and repairs City buildings and property including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, roofing, construction, remodeling, painting, cleaning and office moving. Coordinates with contractors for major repairs.


Parks:

Performs maintenance and upkeep on Citys parks and equipment including sprinkler system, weed spraying, fertilization, aeration, tree trimming, sod installation and repairs for playgrounds.


Responds to after hours emergencies as required.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of general functions and operations of the Public Works Department.
  • Knowledge and understanding of sanitary sewer overflow containment procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of Citys boundaries, properties and street layout.
  • Skill in the operation, use and maintenance of standard hand and power tools.
  • Skill in standard construction or carpentry techniques.
  • Skill in the safe operation of assigned maintenance equipment including field tractors, snow blowers, lawn mowers, landscape maintenance equipment, pressure washers, asphalt roller, compaction tamper.
  • Skill in the operation of assigned water system equipment including water testing equipment, pipe and leak locator, valve exerciser, portable pumps, sewer jetting equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good independent judgment and decision-making.
  • Ability to read and understand maps and drawings.
  • Ability to locate valves to isolate sections of water main and sprinkler systems for repair.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to complete basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to respond and deal with the public in a responsible and professional manner.
  • Knowledge of the Citys personnel policies and procedures.
  • Ability to lead and train employees in the course of daily duties.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City management, employees, citizens and the general publi

WORKING ENVIRONMENTS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical activities include frequent standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, stooping, squatting, climbing; occasional sitting and lifting or carrying up to 80 pounds; hearing, speaking, vision and manual dexterity. Working environment includes work outdoors in cold or heat, uneven terrain, noise, confined working space, electrical and mechanical hazards, vibration, and chemicals. Frequent driving is required.
