R&D Test Engineer

Evolve Additive Solutions – Minnetonka, MN

Evolve Additive Solutions is creating the future of plastics manufacturing with Selective Thermoplastic Electrophotographic Process (STEP) technology -- the first Additive Manufacturing technology to rival traditional processes like injection molding in quality and cost, while bringing to industrial scale the advantages of Additive. We are building an Engineering and Operations team to commercialize our STEP technology, backed by industry stalwarts including LEGO Brand Group and Stanley Black & Decker.

We are looking for a hyper-competent test pilot, who will quickly grasp the critical aspects of STEP technology, and apply a combination of scientific rigor and brilliant intuition to deliver breakthroughs.

  • Report to the Director of Manufacturing
  • Define and lead development and validation testing of STEP additive manufacturing systems
  • Draw on sophisticated physics and materials knowledge and hands-on electrical, mechanical and software skills to keep prototypes and test rigs running, prevent and solve problems, capture reliable data and maximize team learning
  • Gain insights and contribute hardware, software, materials and process innovations
  • Design and build test equipment
  • Train and mentor Evolve, customer, and supplier personnel
  • Provide engineering support and issue resolution to customers and suppliers
  • Contribute to product specifications and requirements definition
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering standards and practices and other operations processes
  • Perform assembly, facility improvement, and maintenance tasks

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in a STEM field
  • Authorized to work in the United States and without travel restrictions
  • Three years experience defining and executing experiments using complex machinery incorporating electronic controls and multiple types of sensors, analyzing results and presenting conclusions and recommendations
  • Broad familiarity with mechanical and electrical tools
  • Strong assembly and troubleshooting skills
  • At least one years experience with automated data acquisition hardware and software - at least using and modifying programs, and preferably developing hardware and software systems
  • Ability to produce reliable results without supervision in statistical data analysis using Minitab or similar tools
  • Some exposure to Design of Experiments
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills
  • Broad familiarity with typical manufacturing processes and materials
  • Some participation in:
  • Research and selection of specialized fabrication processes
  • Application of structured problem-solving frameworks such as Six Sigma or 8D
  • Laboratory and chemical-handling safety

Differentiating Characteristics

  • MS or higher education, preferably in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Physics
  • Experience in the development of products incorporating precision motion and temperature control
  • Ability to derive subsystem testing requirements from whole-system specifications
  • Experience in a technical role in an ISO-certified manufacturing organization
  • Knowledge of equipment compliance regulations and certification testing/resolution experience (NFPA, UL, CE, EMC, CDRH, RCRA, etc)
  • Experience with the development of equipment test standards, test processes and acceptance criteria for intra-tool and inter-tool testing, driving system correlation and results matching
  • FMEA and Risk Assessment experience, driving system reliability improvements and systematically reducing component replacement and equipment costs
  • Design for Manufacturability, Serviceability, and Testability
  • Additional experience and skills, especially:

  • Environment control
  • Machine vision
  • Process development
  • Process or motion control software
  • Electronics packaging
  • Additive manufacturing
