Receptionist/ Administrative Assistant

B\'nai Israel Congregation – Rockville, MD

Bnai Israel Congregation is seeking a Full-Time Receptionist/Administrative Assistant. In this role, the Receptionist/Administrative Assistant will be responsible for general clerical and administrative duties to include coverage of the front desk, supporting membership & development, supporting the Emeritus clergy, and acting as back up to the Rabbinical and Cantorial Administrative staff



  • Greet customers and congregations at the front desk, answer phones, and direct calls and visitors to the appropriate department
  • Monitor, receive and check supply orders
  • Sort Mail, accept packages
  • Log in, copy and distribute checks for donations and programs
  • Ensure daily distribution of calendar of activities and events (partner with Events Manager)


  • Prepare and send out mailings to the Congregants regarding variances, membership, campaigns, and Synagogue events.
  • Maintain Synagogue cemetery records.
  • Maintain development events and campaign records
  • Prepare statement letters for endowment benefactor families
  • Set up and maintain database files on congregations
  • Provide administrative support to the Rabbi Emeritus
  • Provide administrative support to the Program department, to include but not limited to, helping to schedule events, contacting Congregants and vendors, acting as registrant at events, and ordering food/supplies, creating name tags, and signs for programs.
  • Support synagogue committees (Adult Education, Caring, Bereavement, LIFE Lecture, Social Action, Israel Affairs, Faith Community Outreach, Refugee and Immigrant)
  • Draft letters, set up flyers, create email blasts, maintain calendars


Our ideal candidate will have

  • High School diploma; Associate degree preferred
  • Three years experience as an Administrative Assistant required
  • Previous work experience in a religious or non-profit environment desired
  • Proficiency using all Microsoft office products (Word, Excel, Access a plus)
  • Experience using a CRM database
  • Experience with calendaring and using Outlook


  • Strong analytical aptitude
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Ability work successfully in a team environment
  • Excellent attention to detail; accuracy is essential
  • Strong work ethic
  • Good interpersonal skills with a strong emphasis on customer service
  • Knowledge of Judaism is a plus, but not required
