Program Description

The Center for Child & Family Studies (CCFS) is dedicated to helping children get a healthy and successful start in lifeparticularly dual-language learners, children with disabilities or other special needs, and those living in poverty. CCFS promotes high-quality, research-based early care and education and its work informs national, state, and local child and family policies.

Brief position description:

We are looking for a highly motivated professional with significant experience in qualitative methods of data collection and analysis, with a broad range of knowledge, skills, and expertise in teacher development and knowledge of the California early childhood landscape. We are specifically looking for a professional with deep experience conducting interviews and working with diverse teams and populations. Bilingual skills are a plus.

The Research Associate will be responsible for contributing to data collection, recruiting and coordinating with study participants, participating and contributing to team meetings, and conducting data analyses and its initial write up.


  • Assist in the set up and use of qualitative analysis software
  • Support the creation of a participant tracking database through Smartsheet
  • Assist in the recruitment and support of research study participants, including serving as the primary liaison between WestEd research staff and study participants, communicating with study participants, and distributing materials to study participants
  • Analyze data using qualitative methods, including thematic coding, qualitative audio transcriptions, and preparation of initial data report
  • Write clearly for various audiences, including contributing to project reports and research paper


  • Masters Degree in education research, public policy or related fields, including coursework in qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Experience in school settings working with early childhood providers and teachers and administrators. Teaching experience or administrator experience is a plus.
  • Experience in the design, development, and analysis of qualitative methods studies
  • Experience with qualitative methods software and willingness to learn new technology.
  • Strong data analysis and reporting skills.
  • Knowledge of educational issues and the needs of early childhood providers and policymakers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team and with external clients.
  • Experience conducting qualitative interviews and focus groups.
  • Resourcefulness, careful attention to detail, and strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong written communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, including the ability to prioritize work on multiple projects.
  • High level of self-motivation and ability to work independently, when necessary.

The hourly rate starts at $39.88.
