Research Technologist / Lab Operations Management

A position is open to support the Biosafety Operations Manager to efficiently run the Ragon Institutes laboratories. This position will help to coordinate the technological activities of a scientific and research group in relation to the operation of specialized laboratories and facility spaces. The Institute has a large operational laboratory space with 14 Tissue Culture labs and large benches space. We have 15 Principal Investigators with groups of 6-12 people. The position requires 100% FTE to support the daily functions of the laboratory and facility, including but not limited to building maintenance, general equipment maintenance/repair, support of all general lab cold storage in the laboratories; and attendance at monthly meetings with lab managers and/or lab representatives. This position will provide administrative support to ensure that all labs are functioning efficiently and effectively.
Job Duties:
  • General oversight of each floor duties assigned to technicians
  • Tissue Culture (TC) Room management
  • Molecular Lab Space management
    • Pre-PCR Room
    • Gel Electrophoresis
    • PCR machines
  • Freezer space/operations (-80, LN, environmental rooms)
  • Lab Coat laundering management
  • Autoclave functioning and maintenance and proper training of incoming staff
  • Overseeing safety adherence
  • General floor maintenance and ensuring that appropriate staff have access to the TC room
  • Lab inspections for adherence to safety protocols
  • Working closely with the Biosafety Operations Manager and Lab Managers to ensure that lab staff are following policies and procedure
  • Coordinate operational policies and procedures and work closely with research staff on issues which impact laboratory services
  • Upkeep of all emergency contact/equipment contact lists
  • Assist with planning and conducting meetings with labs to ensure compliance with established practices, to implement new policies and to keep employee abreast of current practice and standards
  • Assure that all workers are properly train in laboratory practice and operating equipment. Responsible for keeping a well-maintained log of training
  • Responsible for maintaining laboratory inventory, establishing preventative maintenance schedule for equipment; overseeing computerized records system
  • Conduct new employee laboratory orientation on each floor
  • Liaise with safety team for pertinent chemical, biosafety, waste disposal and fire safety procedures
  • Assist and coordinate any on-site vendor/service/repair needs
  • Assist and manage equipment inventory with warranty and service contracts
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in scientific discipline
  • Minimum of 3 years of laboratory experience. Experience must include working in the Tissue Culture and on the bench
  • Must be able to multi-task proficiently
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent documentation skills
  • Must have good interpersonal skills and ability to perform as a team member
  • Some occasional weekend or evening flexibility may be required
