Senior Data Engineer - ETL

Then we have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Data Engineer - ETL in our corporate office in Houston, TX. This role will design and develop state-of-the-art data pipes to move and integrate into traditional and contemporary cloud-based next generation data warehouses to support operational and analytical requirements. The role while building and maintaining our current data warehouse, will be focused on data engineering related longer-term strategic vision of the organization to build out NextGen data infrastructure to enable self-service reporting, advanced visualizations, analytics enablement and management information, to enable and empower end user analytics to our competitive advantage.

Performance Objectives:

  • Takes personal responsibility and ownership of assigned data engineering tasks to build out our NextGen Data Assets.
  • Provide Technical Leadership setting the long-term direction, market scans, roadmaps and standards for functional, process, and/or technical solutions, ensuring they align to the overall enterprise architecture.
  • Influence Best practices in a de-centralized organization in data ingestion frameworks and integration with IT technical teams for consistency and efficiency and drive adoption of common technologies and standards.
  • Collaborate across various IT teams, business intelligence, business users to enable data and analytics focused on promoting self-service and analytics enablement.
  • Communicates Effectively. Actively seeks out and communicates with key stakeholders in all situations.
  • Expectations:

    50% - Data Engineering Design, development, optimization, and support

  • Develop data flow diagrams, data models, technical design specifications from high-level business requirements to implement robust data collection and processing pipelines.
  • Design, develop and improve complex data pipelines to process and ingest disparate data sources to provision data for various operational and analytical needs.
  • Work collaboratively with Enterprise Architect, BI Team, Business Analysts and other technical teams to develop high-performing data engineering jobs.
  • Test, debug, and document ETL processes, SQL queries, and stored procedures.
  • Curate data for consumption by various BI reporting and analysis tools for self-service and analytics enablement.
  • 20% - Architecture Design

  • Develop state-of-the-art data movement and data engineering designs, data ingestion frameworks, repeatable processes, and implement processes in to support of the existing and target state architectures.
  • Migrate traditional data warehouse to a contemporary cloud-architecture.
  • Familiarity with data architecture principles/approaches, data environment infrastructure considerations, and data modeling principles/approaches.
  • Participate in buy or build recommendations for data solutions.
  • 15% - Business Partnership

  • Drive technical requirements with business and IT stakeholders for implementations of data solutions.
  • Work with businesses to establish clear connections between business goals and strategies and the process data, and technology investments required to achieve them.
  • Regularly interface with end users, analysts, data scientists, developers, and enterprise subject matter experts to understand and evaluate data integration and architecture needs.
  • 15% - IT Innovation

  • Maintain knowledge of industry trends and utilize this knowledge to educate both IT and the business on opportunities to build better target architectures that support and drive business decisions.
  • This role is also responsible for staying current with emerging business and technology trends, promoting the art of the possible, and driving innovation investments in a collaborative, federated environment.
  • Demonstrate deep knowledge of a wide variety of technology disciplines.
  • Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate will have a Bachelors degree Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or Business Administration; OR equivalent work experience.
  • A successful candidate ideally will have a minimum of five years of relevant and progressive professional Data Engineering experience.
  • Must have significant hands-on experience with advanced SQL, data profiling, and data discovery and tuning for performance.
  • Strong experience in dimensional modeling for optimal ease of use and query performance.
  • Experience in developing integrated solutions involving process, data, and technology.
  • Experience in designing and developing ETL data pipelines leveraging traditional ETL tools such as SQL Server SSIS, DataStage, Informatica, Talend, Glue.
  • Experience in working with Business Intelligence and Visualization Tools such as MicroStrategy, Power BI, Tableau or Qlik is a plus.
  • Experience in Insurance Industry data models Accord or IIW is preferred.
  • Experience in sourcing and processing data from PeopleSoft Financials is preferred.
  • Experience with DevOps a plus.
  • Strong understanding of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and or Snowflake.
  • Experience developing Big Data/Hadoop applications using Java, Spark, Hive, Oozie, Kafka and NiFi is a huge plus.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal, with technical and non-technical multi-functional teams.
  • Ability to manage vendor resources onsite and offshore.
  • Self-driven, highly motivated and ability to learn quick.
  • Ability to work in small teams, influence peers and leadership stakeholders in a matrixed environment and also coach and mentor junior resources
  • Demonstrated experience in working on development processes and agile methodologies.
  • Ability to travel, including internationally, up to 15%.
