Special Assistant to the CEO

Center for a New American Security – Washington, DC

The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) seeks to hire a special assistant to support the chief executive officer (CEO). The special assistant will support primarily the CEO by scheduling meetings, drafting letters and emails, answering phones, arranging travel logistics, and managing other administrative duties for the executive office. The holder of the position will learn much about non-profit management and national security policy.


  • The following is an overview of primary responsibilities. Other tasks may be required as needed and responsibilities may vary over time.
  • Schedule meetings and appointments for CEO and EVP;
  • Strategically manage the calendar of the CEO;
  • Arrange travel logistics;
  • Draft email and letter correspondence;
  • Manage email communication;
  • Answer CEO office phone calls;
  • Assist in event planning, preparation and closure;
  • Coordinate the Shawn Brimley Next Generation National Security Leaders program to include, but not limited to:
  • Managing application and selection process,
  • Scheduling monthly leadership dinners,
  • Organizing international study tour,
  • Assisting in drafting and submitting program funding proposals.

  • Bachelors degree;
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Exceptional organizational and multi-tasking abilities;
  • Attention to detail, problem solving approach to challenges, energy, and collegiality;
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team;
  • Legal right to work in the United States.
