Staff Engineer (ITS/Signals)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Staff Engineer is a 0-3 year professional who will assist in McMahons Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Traffic Signals group on a variety of projects under direct supervision of an experienced professional. The ideal candidate will be working out of our Exton, PA office.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Perform traffic signal and intersection capacity analysis, develop traffic signal timings and phasing, design traffic signal installations and modifications, and perform design related calculations. Become familiar with traffic signal and ITS electrical and technology components. Design pavement markings and signing for roadways and intersections. Solve traffic operational challenges
  • Assist with field work, data collection, special studies, etc. as needed and required for design and analyses
  • Complete engineering analyses and designs of ITS projects such as traffic management centers, dynamic message signs, CCTV cameras, roadway weather information systems, incident detection, highway lighting, traffic signals, communication systems, etc.
  • Prepare or modify reports, specifications, construction schedules, plans and designs for projects
  • Draft transmittals, memos, meeting minutes, and response letters
  • Use computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents
  • Assist in client contact and communication pertaining to specific projects as necessary
  • Coordinate with technical staff as necessary

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • AutoCAD and/or Microstation experience
  • Familiarity with traffic capacity analysis software a plus
  • MS Office familiarization
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions to present to supervisors
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors Degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university
  • No formal work experience required; relevant internship or 1-3 years of entry-level experience preferred

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES REQUIRED:

Engineering-In-Training Preferred

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no immediate supervisory responsibilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

This job operates primarily in a professional office environment. This role requires frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works outside the office and may be exposed to outside weather conditions. This position may include occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:

This position may risk exposure to bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.

WORK SCHEDULE:

This is a full-time position. The typical work days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Some night and weekend work may be required.

TRAVEL:

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be required according to the needs of the business.
