Tug Boat Captain

Intracoastal Marine - Chesapeake, VA

Captain Our growing Tug boat operation is looking for reliable Captains who have leadership skills and is willing to mentor younger crew members. Job Duties and Responsibilities • Responsible for the safety of the crew members working aboard the tugboat. This position needs to possess leadership skills while also being able to work as a team to ensure the smooth functioning of the tugboat operations. • Steer and operate vessels, using radios, depth finders, radars, lights, buoys, or lighthouses. • Dock or undock vessels, sometimes maneuvering through narrow spaces, such as locks. • Maintain Vessel and Crew Certifications required per US Flagging and Jones Act requirements • Adjust navigation according to weather conditions. • Inspect vessels to ensure efficient and safe operation of vessels and equipment and conformance to regulations. • Maintain boats or equipment on board, such as engines, winches, navigational systems, fire extinguishers, or life preservers. • Monitor the loading or discharging of cargo. • Stand wheelhouse watch on assigned vessel. • Comply with all state and federal regulatory requirements. • Responsible for executing Safety Management System (SMS) aboard assigned vessel. • Preparation, management and facilitation of safety meetings and safety drills. • Complete Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and or Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA). • Delegate daily tasks to crew to ensure operational readiness. • Oversees training and mentoring of crew members. • Follows company and work site safety policies/procedures and commits to an “incident and injury free” work environment. Experience and Education Requirements • TWIC Card • Merchant Mariners Credentials • 200T Master • Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) (Preferred) • Master of Towing endorsement • CPR/AED First Aid Certification • Driver’s license • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions. • Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process. • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance. • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects. • 10+ years total experience with at least 5 years of experience in a Captain role. • High School diploma or equivalent; Bachelor’s degree preferred. Physical requirements • Ability to work rotational 12 hour watch. • Ability to work 14 days on, 14 days off, revised as necessary. • Outside conditions, extreme heat and cold. Marine operations are subject to varied wake and motion. • Ability to carry materials weighing upwards of 75 pounds to include hoses, garbage, paint, and other materials/items. • Ability to work on scaffold and ladders. • Observe for safety. Vision correctable to 20/40. Full color vision, no night blindness. Full range of all limbs. • Ability to determine safe or unsafe conditions. Process calculations occasionally. • Must be able to tolerate rough seas, vibrations, heat, harsh weather conditions, confined spaces, and high noise levels. • Work will frequently require individuals to push, pull, bend or stand for long periods of time, and climb ladders that have capacity limits of 300 lbs. • Must be able to lift or carry miscellaneous equipment, supplies and parts up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
