How much does it take if you are currently on the F1 STEM OPT extension and want to change the status to H4?

Travel outside the US and schedule a visa appointment with a US Consulate/Embassy. Apply for your H-4 visa and then re-enter the US in H-4 status.

File Form I-539 with the appropriate USCIS center. You can check the processing times here: Processing Times. For example, if you file with USCIS in CA, they are currently processing I-539 applications filed on May 2, 2018, and it’s taking about 5 weeks to 4.5 months to process these.

You must file Form I-539 with USCIS. You can check processing times on USCIS’ website as it varies from Service Center to Service Center (anywhere from 2 months to 1 year!).
