How long does opt approval take?

Currently the opt approval process cycle has been longer considering receipt of high volume application received and US Government directions to scrutinize the documents in detail and try to deny approval as many as possible.

OPT to wait time depends on factors like how soon have you applied for it when did USCIS receive your application, the fees have been paid in time. If we consider that you have applied for it anytime between 80 days to 60 days prior to the last date of application it takes anywhere between 45 days to 90 days to get your OPT approved.

Generally, it can take up to 90 days after the application is received by USCIS to be approved. Often, the time is less than that (maybe around 60 days) but a student should always apply 90 days before graduation if possible.

The earliest your OPT I-20 can be created is February 18, 2019. It takes USCIS Service Centers approximately 3 months (90 Days) to process your OPT Application and issue the EAD card.

It also depends on when you apply. Ideally one should avoid the rush of March to May. Some may get it 30 days or some get it in 40-50 days. I got in after 65 days.

The phase from F1 to OPT is a time-consuming process considering the current situation. So be patient.

Unfortunately, in the real world, the maximum opts waiting time and to hear back regarding OPT approval is not 90 days. While most students will hear back by that time, some will take longer. However, if you have not received a response after 90 days, you can (and should!) file a ticket for the resolution of your case. Your school can help you with this.

OPT approval process nowadays has a longer cycle as the number of applications run into thousands of applications plus the current attitude of the US government has made OPT waiting time considerably longer. Earlier the approval of application did not take much longer as it was scrutinized in detail and with an aim to deny on trivial matters.
